1963 The Ed Sullivan Show: "Now on our stage tonight; The Beatles"
How many have said this before and worked for them? Billy Joel comes to mind from his legacy recordings: I heard the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's show and said that;s I want to be. Born in Nashville it seemed very feasible to me I could do that already having music minor from high school. Already knocking around town in garage bands started learning Cream and Zep bass lines. Hendricks, and of course Beatles tunes. the it really got interesting after Woodstock. The Nashville scene was opening up to the rock & roll world creating more places to play. we'll get into some of that as this project develops, but for now, as for so many in thiis town. The well runs dry and reality takes over. Eat or keep at it awhile longer. Groceries and housing won out.
Therefore; college to learn photography. Following my Dad ,a shutterbug and worked for the Banner most his adult life.
A good tradeoff for the rush of a good set.
So,
For several years, after I have been pursuing the ideal photograph. Now, we have the opportunity to display our work. I tried in my middle years to fall into a newspaper staff, but never landed anywhere that paid well, although it created opportunity.
My site portfolio includes a significant amount of sports photography, particularly Vanderbilt major sports. However, my true passion lies in capturing motor sports events, especially those held at Nashville Fairgrounds.
Following motorsports from a young age as my Dad loved the Indy car series of the day. Penske, Foyt, Andretti, Mears, Unser's. Remember Big Al, Little Al, then mini Al. I was finally fortunate to see Little Al race at the Nashville Super Speedway before the series left for Toronto. It is great to see the the Speedway back on action . A beautiful venue.
In those days there was not Fox every weekend covering each stop on the tour. The best times where Memorial Day weekend that featured the Indy 500, still all these years later is my favorite race weekend of the year.
Then came The France family with the idea to race sedans off the showroom floor. NASCAR was bor in Daytona on the beach. One of the first major events in the early years was the Winston Cup at Nashville Fairgrounds track. Following these resulted in a life long NASCAR fan.
I found this to be quite challenging to remember details of some of these as they span over 4 decades. Unbelievably I have managed to keep these in tack. Apparently the archival quality of the 35mm processing of the day claiming to be archival up to 100 years may turn out to be true. We never believed we would be around to see it if it did.
Most of these will be scans of the original prints. This would only be possible with the available scanners in today's digital world. Thank you digital manufactures that have advanced to make this project possible.
It"s sure to bring back good times , bad times. Another Zep reference, I hope Page and Plant don't mind.
